I wanted to report that two classes from 74th Street Magnet School in
Los Angeles participated in the Earth Day grocery bag project this
year. I read the article in the "Science and Children" journal and then
shared the information. We received bags from two Ralph's
supermarkets. One was in Culver City, CA and the other was in La
Mirada, CA. I returned 36 bags to the La Mirada store. Some of the
students took the bags to their local supermarket. Several of the
parents got involved in the project and helped supply or return bags.
We incorporated the bag project with the "Think Earth" instructional
program, which is available in our area. Thank you for spreading the
word about this project. We will look forward to participating again
next year (and encouraging more teachers in our school).

Comments: This was the first year we participated and almost everyone in our school decorated bags. My first grade class had been discussing how to take care of our Earth and they even came up with the idea of "doing something." At about that same time I had been exploring the intenet and found this website. The kids had a great time and we plan on doing it again next year,too!
My students in Cherryvale, Kansas decorated 60 bags with the 3 R's.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recyle. They were returned to our ONLY grocery
store for Earth Day 99. It was an enjoyable project and their
messages were very pro-Earth. Hope this project was a success all

I am a new member of the internet scene and came across this project by chance while searching for Earth Day ideas. Our school thought this was a wonderful way to promote community awareness and our local store, GIANT, was receptive to the idea. Comments: Our class decided to embark on this project after reading about it in our Weekly Reader. We thought that it would be a very worhtwhile project as it would serve a twofold purpose both providing information around the community about the need to care and do something about keeping our earth clean as well as making a good grade for their effort on this project. We really enjoyed giving our imput and trying to make a difference in the way that our Earth looks today and in the future. Just a brief note to let you know the children of China Primary School in
South China Maine decortated 150 bags that were delievered to local stores
to be passed out tomorrow on Earth Day 1999.
I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this project.
It makes a nice connection with the school and community. I also enjoyed
"giving" the bags to the stores to use. They couldn't believe we didn't
want something in return. Thanks again I look forward to seeing the repot
posted on the grocery web site.

We are the Fourth Grade class at Our Lady Help of Christians School

Greetings!
We are a small rural school, with 72 kids in Grades K-6. We decorated
70 bags today and returned them to our local grocery store in Sharon
Springs, Kansas. They will use them tomorrow on Earth Day. It was a
fun project with all age kids working together.

What a great project!! I am a science teacher at Norwood School in
Bethesda, MD. Our kids (K-6) participated in this project this year with
so much enthusiasm that I hope to do it for a second, third, etc. year.
I checked out the website - which was very helpful, by the way. I'm
having my students sign the guest book tomorrow so that you'll have our
total. In addition to this, I'm wondering if Norwood School could add
some project photos. I took numerous digital images of the process.
Also, I have a friend who is willing to design a few pages of pictures.
Is this possible? My kids are psyched about this prospect since we did a
scavenger hunt through the Earth Day Bags website. Let me know.

Comments: As I stated in my report last year, our goal for this year was to double the amount of Earth Day bags we decorated (110). Well, we did a little better than that - 500 bags!!! The response and support from the staff, teachers, and students was GREAT! This was our second year to participate, so everyone was familar with the
project! Cliff Allison, Manager of College Road Safeway, was very supportive of the project and a pleasure to work with! My students are very enthusiastic about Earth Day and have learned a lot about how we should be taking care of our Mother Earth. We've learned to "Celebrate Earth Day...EVERY day!"...John Denver. Comments: We became partners with Pathmark on Tonnelle Ave in No. Bergen who donated the bags. The kids did a fantastic job and cooperated very enthusiastically.
We are a small school of about 450 children. We decided to contact a local grocer who allowed us
to decorate paper bags for Earth Day. We decorated about 475 bags which we returned to K and M
grocery store to be used to promote environmental awareness. What a simple but useful way to remind shoppers about how important our planet is now and in the future. Thanks for a great idea !

Project. Grades K thru 5th decorated 500 bags supplied by Rod's Harvest
Foods Grocery Store. Our school address is St. Ignatius Elemtary School,

This is the first year that the South Street School in Manorville, NY
participated in the Earth Day Grocery Bag Project. The project was
coordinated by Jennifer Close, Cathy Dries, and Christine Maniaci.
Children in grades K to 3 decorated 230 bags during EXPO ‘99 workshops and
art classes. Students from Alice Castoro's, Liz Evans', Sonny Rotella's,
and Karin Ryon's classes spent additional time working on the project. A
special thanks to teachers Gregory Barbera and Jennifer Harling for their
assistance. The 230 bags (with messages and creative artwork supporting
backyard habitats, birds, wildlife, recycling, and gardening) were
delivered to Waldbaums in Center Moriches, NY for distribution. A South
Street School “Thank You” to store manager Manny Schuch. We look forward
to participating in this successful project for Earth Day 2000!

Comments: All of the students from Lakewood Elementary in took part once
again in an awesome week long celebration of Earth Day !
Activities ranged from releasing salmon fry to planting gardens.
But the highlight and whole school focus for the week was to
decorate our grocery bags. The 500 bags were dontated by our
local Thrifty Foods ( Colwood) store. Our slogans/messages were wide
and varied - This is the only habitable Planet...why waste it !,
Blue Boxes work ( our recycle program ), Save our one Earth, We are
the People of the Earth, Keep it Green !, and many more exciting
phrases.
We have also enclosed a number of photos of the bags we have
designed for our local food store. Last year a number
of our local residents wrote letters to our school
expressing how wonderful they thought the bags were designed!

Ric's Food Center, in Ithaca, donated the grocery bags.
The all six first grade classes at Ithaca South Elementary decorated a total of
325 bags. On Earth Day each class delivered their bags to the grocery store. While there students hung up
posters about helping the Earth. They also recieved a tour of the store and were able to see their
bags carried away full of groceries!

Greetings from North Pole, Alaska!
North Pole High School reports 450 grocery bags. Our local Carrs store
donated a bundle of bags last week for Earth Day. Students wrote
environmental math facts on each bag in addition to the slogan of Earth Day,
"Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle." The sacks will be dropped off at Carrs today,
April 21.
NPHS will be celebrating Earth Day with a festival set up in the gymnasium.
Numerous community members will have booths set up demonstrating
environmental conscious concepts to elementary through high school students.
Make everyday Earth Day. We appreciate your work towards the promotion of
this project.

Comments: We had a great time decorating bags. We are a K-4 school.
Even though I discovered the project just 10 days before
Earth Day, 26 classes signed up and participated. Some
classes worked together in teams or with buddies to decorate
the bags. Our third grade Student Council Representatives
walked to our local Finast store to deliver the bags.
The manager at the store gave each student an apple! Yum!
We even had parent volunteers. Everyone got involved!

Comments: My second grade class decorated 60 bags for Earth Day. The bags were donated by Publix Supermarkets. We returned the bags to Publix, so that they would go home with their customers on Earth Day with a very important message!
Hodgin Elementary decorated 360 bags for "Lucky Savon" in Albuquerque,
New Mexico, USA.
This was our first time and the manager of the store was very excited
about using our bags to decorate the store.
I was surprised to hear our local grocery store uses approxiamately
3,000 brown paper bags per day. WOW!!

Comments: Every student in grades 1-4 decorated a grocery bag (175 bags) during science class. This was our first year participating in this project and we felt it was very successful. Our local Genuardi’s provided the bags. I was amazed at how well the children worked around the advertising on the bags. Some even used it as part of their theme. The store displayed a dozen of our bags but told us that they could not use the decorated bags for groceries due to sanitary concerns. Since most of the children wanted to keep their bags, it was not a major problem. However, some were concerned that this defeats the purpose of the activity. Because of this we may try another grocery store next year.

Comments: Our school recycles paper, boxes, plastics and newspapers throughout the school year. After reading in Weekly Reader about the grocery bag project we decided to participate. Our local Food Lion supplied the bags for us to decorate and they will use them on April 22nd.

Almost all of our entire school (Pre-K through Sixth Grade)participated in this wonderful project. We all had a wonderful time viewing your website, researching Earth Day, and decorating the sacks. HEB, located in Bastrop, Texas, was our partner in this project(we have no local grocery stores large enough to participate). In Harlem, NYC our grocery stores only use plastic bags so we decided to participate with our local deli which uses paper bags. The children are very excited to see their bags used with Earth Day messages and decorations. We will definitely participate again next year. The deli is awarding a prize to the most beautifully decorated bag.

The fourth grade classes at Taylor Road Elementary School in
Reynoldsburg Ohio are proud to announce that they decorated over 200
bags for Earth Day with environmental messages and colorful pictures!
We participated with a local Kroger grocery store. Each class
discussed the importance of recycling, reusing saving Earth's
resources.
The fourth grade had their picture taken in front of Taylor Road School
with their decorated bags and classroom teachers have taken
photographs as well. The brown bags will be delivered to Kroger today,
in time to be used for Earth Day 99.
Next year we plan to make this project school wide and involve grades 1
through 4! We enjoyed participating!

12 were willing to have their bags go to the local market.
The town market has offered to donate enough bags for all

Hi, This year we have decorated 225 bags which will be distributed to
costumers tomorrow from our two grocery stores. The kids did a fine job
and have noticed bags from the previous years. This is the fifth
graders first time of decorating bags. Thanks again for the great idea
which has now become a tradition for the Wayne Middle School.
